Pilates is a fantastic tool for rehabilitating injury. Clinical Pilates differs from standard Pilates in that the principles have been adapted to improve the safety and effectiveness of the exercises and highlight the key elements that improve back pain. The aim of Clinical Pilates is to assess the movement and control of the lower back and pelvic region, then use specific exercises to help correct the problem areas. These basic exercises use sub-maximal muscle co-contraction. This means gentle low-level exercise of several muscles at the same time. The focus is more on teaching the brain to recruit the correct muscle groups to find the correct pattern of movement than on the strength and length of muscles and joints.

Clinical Pilates

Pilates is a fantastic tool for rehabilitating injury. Clinical Pilates differs from standard Pilates only in that the principles have been adapted to improve the safety and effectiveness of the exercises and highlight the key elements that actually do improve back pain.

The last few years have seen great interest in research supporting abdominal stabilisation exercises for management of spinal injuries. It is well accepted now that poor control and lack of endurance of the trunk musculature are associated with low back pain.

Here at Emma James Physio, we have Pilates trained Physiotherapists ready to assist you with finding greater control over your spinal problems. Our tailor-made classes pinpoint the weak areas of the body and relevant exercises are taught to create a more balanced and injury-free body.

All people wanting to join our classes must first undergo a one-to-one session with one of our trained Physiotherapists to assess and diagnose your injury and to talk you through the core principles of Pilates. This will allow you to then join our classes with a good knowledge of what you should be aiming to achieve in each class.

Classes are taught by a trained Physiotherapist, and the classes are often graded by difficulty to accommodate all levels of participant, beginners through to advanced level.

We have a maximum of 12 people to a session so if you want to join one of our classes, please contact the main Practice Tel: 01442 870686

Exercise based Pilates

Not only can EJP help you achieve your Pilates goals and objectives through one-to-one sessions and matwork classes, we hold Pilates equipment based one-to-one sessions within the clinic.

Using the Pilates reformer we are able to mimic many of the matwork exercises, work more strenuously and increase CV fitness and tone specific muscle groups. The Pilates equipment also allows us to mimic sports specific rehabilitation exercises and break down the movement required for a specific activity and practise that independently.

Using much of the equipment we can keep you exercising right through your pregnancy and beyond, we are able to adapt to the necessary stages of the pregnancy and the modifications that are necessary. The reformer allows us to work individual areas in isolation and strengthen the muscle groups used during labour and during the later stages of the third trimester.

Post-operatively we are able to start rehabilitation much sooner than most rehabilitation centres, as the reformer allows us to work in a non-weight-bearing status. We can work the entire body to a high level and maintain your post operative level of fitness which will speed up your recovery process. The equipment enables us to improve strength of the healing structures without loading them unnecessarily.

So if you want a new challenge or you are concerned about losing fitness while another injury heals, or want to work an area very specifically in isolation then equipment-based Pilates is just what you need.
