Hydrotherapy
What is hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is just like physiotherapy in a pool. The pool is the same as a normal swimming pool with a few differences; it’s warmer – a constant 34-36°C- like a luke warm bath: it’s shallow- so no need to be a swimmer. Utilising the properties of water and using the principles of buoyancy, resistance and current treatment programmes can be established.
The immersion in water and exercising in water for health benefits has been used for thousands of years without a scientific evidence base until about 30 yrs ago, since then there has been a huge amount of medical research in to the benefits of hydrotherapy. The research concluded that hydrotherapy has the following effects:
- improved blood circulation
- lymphatic circulation improved
- relaxes tension in tissues
- alleviates pain
- calms the nervous system
Clinical hydrotherapy is important in the treatment of many conditions however, there are few private hydrotherapy facilities available. Here at E J Physio we have specialist hydrotherapy facilities available at Champneys, Tring, Hertfordshire. There is a small, individual pool for 1-2-1 treatment sessions with easy walk in access. You will be with a qualified physiotherapist at all times and your programme will be specifically designed to meet your needs and requirements.
